Traumatic memories

Each time my dad

would return from a

business trip

he’d always bring

me a present.

***

Sometimes it was

a pull tab,

***

or a bottle top,

***

or bits of string,

***

or some paper clips.

***

Then one day my mom

told me that he wasn’t

my real dad but a crow.

***

And worse,

***

they were splitting up.

    • Thanks, B. Parenthetically, the title of this post, up until the last second, was “Caw! He said” Then I realized I was giving the end away at the beginning. But I sure did like that title. Anyway, good to hear from you, old sport.

  1. Your Mom asked the raven if he would continue to bring you pull tabs, bottle tops, bits of string, and paper clips.
    Quote the raven: “Nevermore!”
(The relationship soured because your Mom mistook the raven for a crow. It actually was a crow, but it identified as a raven. Therefore, we have to respect that and call it a raven. Even though it wasn’t.)
