I’ve had a recurring dream over the years where there is a secret staircase behind the closet that leads to many upper floors of a ranch house. I explore the vast empty rooms and immaculate kitchens on every level, and then, from the highest one, take a ladder up to a small chamber with a window that looks out on the world.
