    • Back in the mid 1970s my father took us on a trip to Palm Springs. It was the week after Christmas, and we stayed at a hotel that had a giant Indian arrow piercing the grounds in front. Anyway, in the morning everyone is getting ready to leave for breakfast and I was watching TV, when Citizen Kane came on. The film opens with a series of dark and foreboding shots of a mysterious castle on a hill. I thought I was watching a horror movie. And I loved horror movies. My dad comes in and so, I asked, “What movie is this?” He watched for a few seconds and said, “That’s the greatest movie ever made.”
Then he turned off the TV!
For years afterward the specter of Citizen Kane hung over my head. I had to see that movie. But this was in an era before VHS so I had to wait til I was in college. But it was worth the wait. Citizen Kane is as good as they say. Thanks, Sadje.
