The jockey

I saw an old horse jockey

riding a carousel

and I asked him,

“Is it as it was?”

***

The old jockey just smiled

a jockey smile, and said,

“This is as far as I ever got.”

***

At his words,

the carousel

began its slow finish.

***

And the old jockey

leaned back on his horse

and said,

“Whoa.”

  1. Sadly, afterwards, they had to take to old jockey out back and put him down. Did I say, “sadly”? Sorry, I meant “naturally.”

  2. The carousel feels like a perfect metaphor for life: we keep moving, but sometimes we are simply circling the same place. And that final “Whoa.” says more than a paragraph could.
