The first thing

my mom would do

with her birthday

present was shake

the box

shuffle shuffle shuffle

“What is it?” she’d ask with a grin

but I think,

deep down,

she already knew

it was just more

chicken bones

If after downloading

the Depeche Mode song,

“Enjoy the Silence”,

I had heard nothing

but actual silence —

I won’t mince words,

I would not have enjoyed it

I’m thinking about

the things we used

to do that rhymed

Like, riding a bus,

passing a suss,
