I thought the rhyme said “a pocketful of posies” because the red rings from the plague looked like a ring of flowers. Regardless, I was pleased to be reminded of that old playground game.

I was only half right! I just Googled it and found that the posies were the herbs carried to ward off the smell of the plague. The rosy rash was a symptom of the disease.
